Passcode & Expiring Share Links

Make sharing easy. Give people control over it. I added passcodes and expiration to Lucid's share links, getting enterprise deals past a security roadblock.

Lucid Software · 2019 – 2023

The problem

Sending a link is easy. Knowing where it ends up? A little harder. It can get forwarded, or sit around long after anyone needs it.

Enterprise customers needed more control over that. They still wanted easy sharing. But without the right security controls, some couldn't move forward with Lucid.

What I built

I added passcodes and expiration dates. Having the URL alone isn't enough when a link requires a passcode. And once a link expires, it can no longer be accepted to gain access to the document.

The controls respect the organization's rules, too. If the account limits how long a link can stay open, an individual can't give theirs a later expiration. Easy to share doesn't have to mean easy to bypass the rules.

Outcome

Existing customers got the controls they needed, and we unblocked key enterprise deals. This wasn't a flashy feature. It was the thing standing between a customer wanting Lucid and being able to buy it.

Lucid's security reference covers the controls and account-level rules.
